Solution for Iraq Military problem

I'm not a military man by training, but this seem so obvious I wonder why no one has thought of it to date. Given that we would like to maintain a military presence in the region and that we desire to get our military out of the day to day security operations in Iraq why don't we sign a deal for an unlimited lease of some land for a military base (Think Guantanamo Bay in Cuba) in Iraq and then instead of a pull out of Iraq we are pulling into our base... one where we can protect our people. We will still be close enough to help out if necessary and then have a military presence in the area from which we can be a stabilizing force. This will force the Iraqi's to step up for security, will provide a time table for from which we can move towards, and save face for everyone involved.

Why hasn't this been though of by anyone other than a rambling ordinary guy?

How do we push it forward?

We may want a military presence in Iraq, but the radical Islamic terrorists do NOT want us to. They didn't like us having a base in Saudia Arabia, and as long as we are in Iraq they will keep targeting our troops. We do need to somehow instill in the Iraqis the sense that they need to totally take responsibility for keeping their country secure. I agree with the president that we cannot publicize a pull-out date, that is just plain crazy to give a timetable to the enemy. I do think we need to set some bench marks for the Iraqi forces, and just keep at it till we get there. The sooner the better of course.

It's about us. We need a presence in the region. The Islamic terrorists will not be able to get to a secure facility ... at least they will not be able to do much damage. No timetable for pull out... a timetable for us to pull in to our base. We are still here if you need us... we are not abandoning you... we are just not going to patrol your streets anymore.

I agree. I think it's a fantastic and necessary idea. The ideal location would be the Iraq / Kuwait border. Just carve it out of Iraqi territory and make it soverign U.S. property.
